Curriculum:
I’d like to briefly inform you about some concepts we will cover in first grade. Our reading and writing is rigorous and is aligned with the Common Core State Standards. In addition, we will utilize a separate phonics program entitled “Fundations”. The “Fundations” program is a continuation of the kindergarten series. “Fundations” is a highly structured and intensive approach to decoding, reading and spelling. “Fundations” teaches the foundational skills of the Common Core State Standards in reading, writing, speaking, language and listening. Students are introduced to phonics rules, vocabulary and trick words. In addition, students will also participate in reading workshop approach through “School Wide” and “Daily Five”.
We are using the math series “Bridges”. Bridges is also aligned with the Common Core. In addition to our math series, students participate in math stations and guided math practice. With the little remaining time left in the day, students will also have science and social studies.
There will be opportunities for parents to get involved at both home and school. We will go on field trips and will also have volunteer opportunities. Take time to extend school into your home. Please become involved from home by asking your child about his/her school day. Go beyond “How was your day?” Ask your child about specific topics. (I.e. What did you read about today? What happened in the story? How did the characters solve the problem? Ask me a math problem you learned how to solve today. Is there another way to solve the math question?)
Students are expected to return their “ Take Home Folder” to school daily. It is our communication link between home and school. When you send notes, forms, or any important papers to school put it in your child’s “Take Home Folder”. Please check your child’s folder daily for homework and notes.
I look forward to having close communication with parents. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.
